The Crispiest Grilled Cheese Ever – and You Don’t Need a Frying Pan

Here’s how to make it:
Step 1: Preheat your air fryer
Start by preheating your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). It only takes 2-3 minutes but makes all the difference – it helps the bread start to crisp up right away, giving you that satisfying crunch.
Step 2: Assemble the Sandwich
Take your two slices of bread and spread a thin layer of softened butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice. (If you’ve never tried mayonnaise on the outside of grilled cheese, trust me – it’s incredibly golden and crispy.)
Place one slice buttered side down on a plate or cutting board. Add your choice of cheese on top. If you’re adding anything extra – like sliced tomatoes, bacon or caramelized onions – add them on top of the cheese.
Top with the other slice of bread, buttered side up.
Step 3: Cook to perfection
Place your finished sandwich in the airfryer basket. Make sure it’s flat and has some space around it – airflow is key to that even golden brown crispiness.
Cook at 190°C for about 4-5 minutes. Then carefully flip the sandwich with tongs and cook for another 2-3 minutes .
You’ll know it’s done when both sides are nicely browned and the cheese inside is warm and melted to perfection.
Step 4: Let it rest, then slice and serve
Take the sandwich out and place it on a plate or cutting board for about a minute . This quick rest will allow the cheese to set slightly, so it doesn’t ooze out the moment you cut into it.
Cut it in half – diagonally, of course, because that’s the classic way – and serve it hot.
Enjoy your crispy masterpiece with a warm bowl of tomato soup , a crunchy salad or some cooked French fries . Or just enjoy it as is. It’s perfect on its own.
