This popular drink may strengthen bones after age 60: a new study reveals

Bone health: tea is said to be the most beneficial drink

According to the study, tea drinkers had slightly higher bone mineral density at the hip . “Even small improvements can translate into fewer fractures in large groups ,” Professor Enwu Liu explained in the press release. Moderate coffee consumption (two to three cups) did not harm bone health, but more than five cups a day was associated with lower density.

Ryan Liu, co-author, discusses the role of catechins, substances found in tea, which  “may promote bone formation ,” according to the press release. Conversely, the caffeine in coffee  “interferes with calcium absorption,”  although these effects  “can be offset by adding milk,”  he explains in a statement. “Our findings don’t mean you should give up coffee or start drinking liters of tea ,  ” the author states.  “But they do suggest that moderate tea consumption could be a simple way to support bone health , and that very high coffee intake may not be ideal, especially for women who consume alcohol.”

These results echo a large scientific review published in November 2025 in  Beverage Plant Research , which confirms the benefits of moderate tea consumption. According to this study,  it reduces overall mortality and cardiovascular risks .
