What is the end of the tape measure for?

This ingenious system is based on a very simple principle: compensating for the thickness of the metal tip itself. Depending on whether you’re measuring the inside of a space (like a window frame) or the outside (like the width of a table), this tab shifts slightly—about   1.5 millimeters   —to automatically correct for the difference due to its thickness.
