Discover the unexpected benefits of chia seeds and their effects on your health. Here’s what you need to know about these amazing little seeds.
Where do these seeds come from?
Chia seeds originated in Guatemala and Mexico. They belonged to the sage family and were an integral part of the Mayan and Aztec diet, along with corn and beans. In the Mayan language, “chia” means strength, a term that reflects the nutritional properties of these small seeds.
Digestive Health:
Chia seeds are rich in soluble fiber and are great for the digestive system. Two tablespoons provide about 10 grams of fiber, which is a third of the daily requirement recommended by doctors (30 grams per day). Given that our current diet is often low in fiber, consuming chia seeds can help maintain good digestive health, reduce blood sugar spikes, and prevent constipation.
Weight loss aid:
Thanks to their ability to swell when in contact with water, chia seeds increase the feeling of fullness. This mechanism can help regulate food intake by prolonging the feeling of fullness and fighting cravings. Although they are not a miracle solution for weight loss, they can be a valuable asset as part of a balanced diet.
Antioxidant Protection:
Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants such as caffeic acid, flavonols, and chlorogenic acid. These antioxidants help fight free radicals, chemical molecules that damage cells and cause premature aging and cellular degeneration. Consuming chia seeds daily helps limit the formation of these free radicals and eliminate those that are already present.
Heart Support:
Chia seeds contain a flavonoid called quercetin, which strengthens blood vessel walls and reduces cholesterol oxidation, limiting the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids (75% of their fat content is omega-3), which are anti-inflammatory and promote healthy blood flow. The omega-6 fatty acids they contain complete this perfect balance for heart health.
