This dietary supplement almost cost him his liver: “I will never make that mistake again.”

It’s a story that begins like many others: a small « natural » pill taken every day, with the best intentions in the world. But for Claire, 57, the miracle cure turned into a living hell.

When a natural product becomes an unsuspected danger

Claire  suffered from chronic joint pain. One day, while browsing social media, she came across a video extolling the virtues of turmeric, the golden spice renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties. Seduced by a doctor’s reassuring words, she bought turmeric  supplements…and began taking them daily.  Dosage: 2,250 mg per day. A vastly excessive amount, without her realizing it.

At first, everything seemed fine. Then the symptoms appeared: extreme fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain… Vague signs, easy to attribute to something else. Until  Claire  noticed that her urine was turning dark,  despite staying well hydrated . The warning sign was real. But she only made the connection two months later, after hearing a man’s story on television about a similar experience.

An emergency hospitalization… and an unexpected outcome

At the emergency room, the verdict was unequivocal: tests showed liver enzymes  nearly 60 times higher than normal . Her liver was severely damaged.  Claire  was transferred to a specialized hospital in  Lyon . According to her doctor, she was one breath away from total liver failure. A transplant was being considered.

Thankfully, after six days in intensive care, her liver began to regenerate. She pulled through,  just barely . Traumatized, she confided:  « I will never take dietary supplements again. »

This is far from an isolated case.

This type of incident is not an exception. According to specialists, cases of liver problems linked to supplements are  steadily increasing . And turmeric is under scrutiny. Between 1995 and 2020, liver transplants related to  dietary supplement use increased eightfold in the United States. In France,  ANSES (the French Agency for Food  , Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) recorded more than 100 reports of adverse effects linked to turmeric in 2022 alone, including several cases of hepatitis.
